Descrizione del progetto

Structural Changes and Phase Transitions in feldspars

The researches concern experimental studies on the phase transitions, the structural changes and the order/disorder phenomena in feldspars, as a function of temperature and pressure. These studies involve structural studies on thermally treated feldspars and investigations on phase transitions and on Al-Si ordering at different T and P. The investigations are carried out in situ at HT and HP, by means of modern technologies, which allow to reproduce in laboratory the conditions present in the Earth's mantle and then to define the transformations in minerals occurring in these extreme conditions. The crystal structures are studied directly at HP, in a range between 0 and 10 GPa, using diamond anvil cell (DAC).

The investigations are carried out on alkali feldspar (analbite, anorthoclase), on alkaline-earth feldspars (Ca-, Ba-, Sr- feldspar) and on lead feldspar, and they are of particular interest both in mineralogical and in ceramic field. Because these studies should lead to a better definition of the Equations of State (EoS), they are of particular importance for petrology. In fact, these researches allow obtaining a more accurate definition of the experimental changes induced by variations in T and P, and they allow to characterize the structural and thermodynamic behaviour of feldspars.
