Descrizione del progetto

Zeolites are microporous crystalline solids with well defined structures. Generally they contain silicon, aluminium and oxygen in their framework and cations, water and/or other molecules wthin their pores. They occur naturally as minerals or can be synthesized in laboratory.

ImPACT will study the behavior of molecules and porous materials under the combined effects of applied pressure, spatial confinement and constraints in morphology.

ImPACT will be developed along two research lines (RL):

1) Study of the pressure-induced aggregation of molecules (e.g. water, amimoacid, small conjugated organic hydrophobic molecules) in microporous cavities (high-silica zeolites with different cavity shapes).
2) Identification and description of pressure-induced modifications of functional properties of hybrid materials currently applied in strategic areas, from sustainable energy technologies to biomedical sciences, e.g. Zeolite L (LTL) + organic colorants (dyes).

ImPACT’s goals will be accomplished through the synergic collaboration of the 3 research units. The physico-chemical characterization of the materials will be performed by adopting a multi-technique approach based on the integration of experimental and theoretical methodologies. These investigations will lead to a comprehensive picture of the pressure-induced nanoscale processes of molecular aggregation in confined environments.
