Research in climatology applied to human health - Pedro Murara (University of Fronteira Sul) 

Investigations between climate and health is not a contemporary research topic, since Hippocrates (~400 BC) several studies have addressed perceptions and evidence related to environmental impacts, including climate, on the health conditions of human populations. We know that some climatic elements can harm human health or carry the pestilence with them. Initially associated with approaches more focused on unhealthy and/or infectious-parasitic diseases, climate and health studies began to gain a new dimension in their approaches. Over the last few years, numerous scientists, such as medical professionals, geographers, nurses, meteorologists, demographers, economists, and others, have explored diseases from a sociodemographic perspective, linked to environmental analyses, whether climatological or not. It should be clarified that the episodes of morbidities cannot be fully attributed to climatic conditions, other socio-environmental variables can contribute to such problems, however, these physical aspects can potentiate the diseases, hence the importance of studying them.

The speaker - Pedro Murara is a geographer, PhD in Geography. Professor and researcher at the Federal University of Fronteira Sul (UFFS) and member of the Brazilian Association of Climatology (ABClima). His research is focused on Biogeography and Climatology, with emphasis in climate and human health, especially respiratory diseases.
